How it works & handicap rules

How to make balanced golf teams

  1. Enter your golfers and handicaps, then select the handicap type you have.
  2. Check the suggested team count. Open Format & options for playing groups or a nine-hole round.
  3. Generate your teams, review the result, then copy, download, or make a tee sheet.

Scramble balancing uses the unrounded team allowance. Ordinary playing groups are balanced by average Course Handicap. Golfers’ strengths, course conditions, and team chemistry still affect the result.

Scramble handicap calculator: 2, 3, or 4 players

The recommended allowances below apply to each player’s Course Handicap, ordered from lowest to highest. Add the weighted contributions, then round the team total once to a whole stroke.

Team sizeLowest to highest Course Handicap
2 players35% + 15%
3 players30% + 20% + 10%
4 players25% + 20% + 15% + 10%

Example: a four-player team with Course Handicaps of 5, 10, 15, and 20 has a weighted total of 7.5 and a team Playing Handicap of 8.

These are the USGA’s recommended scramble allowances. See its scramble calculation example for use of unrounded Course Handicaps. Your competition’s terms take precedence. This tool does not issue an official Handicap Index.

Common questions

Can I use this as a scramble handicap calculator?

Yes. Choose Scramble teams, set the team count to 1, and enter two, three, or four golfers. The result shows the team Playing Handicap and each player’s weighted contribution.

How are golf teams balanced?

For scramble teams, WORM tries multiple arrangements and player swaps to reduce differences in unrounded scramble handicaps. For ordinary playing groups, it reduces differences in average Course Handicap. The result is a practical suggestion, not a guarantee of equal winning chances or the mathematically best arrangement.

Should I enter Handicap Index or Course Handicap?

Select the input type you have. Course Handicap must be for the tees and holes being played; use its unrounded value when available. Handicap Index mode converts each Index using one shared Course Rating, Slope Rating, and par. For different tees, calculate each player’s Course Handicap separately and use Course Handicap mode; any further competition adjustments remain the organizer’s responsibility.

What if the number of golfers does not divide evenly?

Every golfer is included once. Team sizes differ by at most one player, with two to four golfers on each scramble team. Uneven team sizes are flagged. The organizer must agree short-team rules; the tool does not invent a missing player or extra shots.

Does this work for nine holes and plus handicaps?

Yes. Select 9 holes and use the ratings for those nine holes when converting an Index. The tool halves the Index, rounds that half to one decimal, then calculates the nine-hole Course Handicap. Enter plus handicaps with a plus sign, such as +2.4.

Is it free, and where does my roster go?

Both tools are free and require no account. Calculations happen in your browser. Making a tee sheet passes the team list within the same browser tab; it does not upload the names to WORM or create a public link. Copy, CSV, and print outputs contain the names you enter.
