A scoring plan to break 80, 90 or 100
Start with the number you want to beat, then subtract one. Subtract the course’s par from that target to find your over-par budget. The tool turns that budget into one possible mix of hole scores and can calculate what remains after you start playing.
| Goal | Target | One way to get there |
|---|---|---|
| Break 80 | 79 | 11 pars + 7 bogeys |
| Break 90 | 89 | 1 par + 17 bogeys |
| Break 100 | 99 | 9 bogeys + 9 double bogeys |
What if I make a double bogey?
One hole changes the mix, not the arithmetic. To shoot 89 on a par-72 course with three doubles and no birdies, you need 4 pars and 11 bogeys on the other holes. Try the scoring-mix controls to see how your own assumptions change the plan.
If you have already taken 46 strokes through nine holes, an 89 target leaves 43 strokes for the remaining nine. The remaining-hole calculator includes every stroke and penalty you enter; it does not estimate your future performance.
Use the card as a simple reference, not a rule to force aggressive shots on certain holes. Choose targets that suit your own game and the course. These are gross-score calculations, not handicap estimates or a coaching program.
Common questions
What score do I need to break 90?
You need 89 or lower. On a par-72 course, 1 par and 17 bogeys total 89. A different combination, such as 4 pars, 11 bogeys and 3 double bogeys, also totals 89. This calculator changes the plan for your course par.
How many pars do I need to break 80?
On a par-72 course, 11 pars and 7 bogeys total 79. Birdies can offset worse holes. Change the birdies and double bogeys in the scoring-mix options to see another way to reach the same target.
Can I break 100 with double bogeys?
Yes. On a par-72 course, 9 bogeys and 9 double bogeys total 99. That is one possible mix, not a requirement to make those exact scores or a promise about your next round.
Does this support nine-hole goals?
Yes. Choose 9 holes, enter that nine’s par and choose a goal such as breaking 40, 45 or 50. The target is one stroke below the number you want to break. It is not converted into an 18-hole handicap score.
Can I work out what I need over the remaining holes?
Yes. Open Already playing, enter the number of completed holes and your total strokes including penalties, then update the plan. The remaining stroke budget is your target score minus the strokes already taken. This does not predict how you will play.
Is the plan based on gross or net scores?
Gross scores: every stroke and penalty counts. No handicap strokes are subtracted. The simple plan spreads the over-par budget as evenly as possible. The optional custom mix uses birdies, pars, bogeys and double bogeys; it does not assign targets to particular holes.
