Find a tee box that fits your game

This golf tee box calculator gives an 18-hole course-length guideline from your average total 7-iron distance. Enter the tee lengths from your scorecard to see which is closest to the guideline’s midpoint. A tee inside the range is marked; the tool also tells you when every option falls outside it.

The calculation uses the nearest published 7-iron reference below. It deliberately keeps the broad range instead of presenting a precise, personalized yardage. At an exact tie, it uses the shorter reference.

Look beyond the yardage

Forced carries, elevation, weather and the mix of par 3s, 4s and 5s can make equal-length courses play differently. Tee colors are not standardized. Ask the course which tees give you reasonable carries and enjoyable approach shots.

Common questions

Which golf tees should I play?

Start with a course length that suits your usual 7-iron distance, then consider the course’s forced carries, difficulty and conditions. This tool uses the nearest published reference in the USGA’s seven-row 7-iron guide, with optional comparisons against the actual tee lengths you enter.

Should I enter carry distance or total distance?

Use your average total 7-iron distance, including bounce and roll, under normal conditions. Use a representative shot, not your longest shot. The USGA’s current Best Course Length Calculator also specifies total distance.

Are tee colors the same at every course?

No. White, blue, red and other colors can represent very different lengths at different courses. Compare the full 18-hole yardage on the scorecard instead of choosing by color, age or gender.

How are distances between the published examples handled?

WORM selects the nearest published 7-iron reference; an exact tie uses the shorter reference. It does not interpolate or claim a custom USGA calculation. In meters, the course range is converted to the nearest 10 meters, and tee comparisons use that displayed range. The result names the reference used. At 80 yards or less and 170 yards or more, it uses the table’s endpoint ranges.

Can I use this for nine holes or unusual course layouts?

The ranges are broad 18-hole guidelines. Do not automatically halve them for a particular nine, which may have a different mix of holes. For course-specific par configurations, use the linked USGA calculator and ask the course about suitable tees and forced carries.
